Here are the 10 most common reasons your AC isn't cooling:

It’s incredibly frustrating when your AC decides to act like a glorified fan right when you need it most. Since you're dealing with a "no cooling" situation, the problem usually falls into one of three categories: airflow blocks, mechanical failure, or maintenance needs.

Here are the 10 most common reasons your AC isn't cooling:

1. Dirty Air Filter

This is the #1 culprit. If the filter is clogged with dust, air can't flow over the cooling coils. This can actually cause the system to freeze up.

Fix: Check your filter; if you can't see light through it, replace or wash it.

2. Thermostat Settings

It sounds simple, but check if the thermostat is set to "On" instead of "Auto." If it's on "On," the fan runs constantly even when the AC isn't actually cooling, blowing warm air.

Fix: Set it to "Auto" and ensure the temperature is at least 3 degrees below the room temp.

3. Clogged Condenser Unit (Outdoor)

The outdoor unit needs to "breathe" to release the heat it gathered from inside. If it’s covered in dirt, leaves, or grass clippings, it can't shed that heat.

Fix: Gently hose down the outdoor unit to clear debris.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coil (Indoor)

If you see ice on the indoor unit or the copper pipes, your coil is frozen. This is usually caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant.

Fix: Turn the AC off and let it melt completely before trying again.

5. Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the "blood" of the system. If there is a leak, the AC can't remove heat. Note: ACs don't "consume" refrigerant; if it’s low, you have a leak.

Fix: This requires a professional technician to patch the leak and recharge the gas.

6. Tripped Circuit Breaker

If the outdoor compressor isn't running at all, it might have tripped a breaker.

Fix: Check your electrical panel. If it’s tripped, flip it back once. If it trips again, stop—you have an electrical short.

7. Faulty Capacitor

The capacitor is like a big battery that gives the motor a "kick" to start. If it fails, the fan or compressor won't spin.

Fix: You’ll often hear a humming sound from the outdoor unit. This needs a pro to replace.

8. Clogged Drain Line

Modern ACs have sensors that shut the system down if the water drain (condensate line) is backed up with algae or slime to prevent flooding.

Fix: Check the drain pan. If it’s full of water, you need to clear the pipe.

9. Damaged Compressor

The compressor is the "heart" of the AC. If it fails, the cooling cycle stops entirely.

Fix: This is a major repair. If your unit is old, it might be more cost-effective to replace the whole system.

10. Leaky Air Ducts

Sometimes the AC is cooling fine, but the cold air is escaping into your attic or crawlspace through holes in the ductwork.

Fix: Look for disconnected ducts or whistling sounds in your vents.
